Russia destroys critical energy facility in Ukraine’s 2nd largest city

Russian troops destroyed a major energy facility in Russia’s second-largest Kharkiv city with a missile strike, Mayor Ihor Terekhov said on Thursday. In a statement published in Telegram, Terekhov said the emergency response headquarters was operating around the clock, without clarifying what sort of facility had been struck. "We prepared for various scenarios, and now we are acting clearly and responsibly," Terekhov stressed. Regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said officials were assessing the extent of damage.

Russia hit outskirts of Kharkiv at around 3 PM on Thursday, with explosions being heard in several districts of the city. In a separate attack, Russia struck capital Kyiv with drones, with debris falling on a 15-story residential building, destroying a wall on the building’s technical floor.

Earlier on Tuesday, Russia Air Forces launched around 300 drones and dozens of missiles of various types, including ballistic missiles at Ukraine. Kyiv was hit with a ballistic missile, while Kharkiv, Odesa, and Kryvyi Rih were also hit by missiles, resulting in four deaths. In yet another attack on southern Zaporizhzhia region, two utility workers were injured and power outages affected a large number of consumers.

Russia has been scaling up strikes on Ukraine’s energy grid in winter months for the fourth consecutive year since the start of full-fledged invasion in February 2022. On January 14, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy declared a state of emergency in energy sector due to relentless Russian attacks that knock out heat and power for a large number of residents.
