Russia overwhelms Ukraine’s energy grid in massive attacks amid peace talks in UAE

Russia struck Ukraine’s energy infrastructure on Saturday, causing explosions in capital Kyiv and knocking out power to more than 1.2 million properties across the country.

Up to 6,000 buildings were left without electricity in Kyiv as the temperatures have dropped to -10 degrees, with many apartments freezing due to disruption of work in the centralized heating system.

The attack on capital killed one person and injured four others, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Nineteen more people, including a child, were injured in northeastern Kharkiv city. The massive attack on the country’s energy grid came a day after the first round of the trilateral peace talks between Ukraine, Russia and the United States in the United Arabic Emirates. Talks in the UAE were the highest-level known summit between the three sides since the start of the nearly four-year-war. US President Donald Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff, son-in-law Jared Kushner were joined by Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov and Russia's Admiral Igor Kostyukov, to discuss a ceasefire framework. The trilateral meeting ened without any clarity.

Russia this year launched its heaviest winter attack on Ukraine’s power grid since the start of its war of invasion in February 2022. The relentless attacks on the energy infrastructure have left millions with only hours of electricity daily and many without water and heat. The latest attacks have knocked out power for over 800,000 in capital Kyiv and 400,000 in northern Chernihiv region, Deputy PM Oleksiy Kuleba said.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russian launched barrage of 375 drones and 21 missiles, as well as two Tsirkon ballistic missiles across the country overnight.
