Russia, Ukraine, US to hold next round of peace talks in UAE this week

Russia, Ukraine and the United States will hold new trilateral talks this week after two days of US-brokered negotiations in the UAE, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Monday, signalling intensification of diplomatic efforts to and the nearly four-year-war.

Posting in social media after receiving the Ukrainian delegation to the Abu Dhabi meeting, Zelenskiy said the talks in the United Arab Emirates marked the first high-level trilateral dialogue format in a long time.

“The central focus of the discussions was the possible parameters for ending the war. A lot was discussed, and it is important that the conversations were constructive,” Zelensky wrote.

In a separate post Monday, Zelenskiy said the trilateral meeting discussed a “range of important issues - mainly military, essential to bringing the war to an end, and complex political matters that remain unresolved.” While describing the meeting as “substantial”, Zelenskiy did not provide details of specific proposals discussed during the trilateral meetings held on Friday and Saturday. US President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff also characterized the meeting as “very constructive”, stressing that “plans were made to continue conversations next week in Abu Dhabi.” “President Trump and his entire team are dedicated to bringing peace to this war,” Witkoff said.

The meeting marked the first time the delegations from the three countries sat down together since Russia’s full-fledged invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Although the two-day meeting did not yield any significant results, it signalled a hope for a future deal to end the war.

Meanwhile, Zelenskiy revealed on Sunday that the document outlining the security guarantees sought by Ukraine as 100% ready. “For us, security guarantees are primarily bilateral security guarantees with the US. The document is 100% ready. We expect our partners to be ready with the date and place when we will sign it,” Zelenskiy said at a news conference in Lithuania.
