Ukraine, Russia agree to hold more talks in UAE next week

Ukraine and Russia will hold a second round of peace talks next week to end the war, after a two-day meeting in the United Arabic Emirates ended with no clarity.

US officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told local media that the talks will resume on February 1. Touching upon the Friday’s trilateral talks, the first known high-level direct contact, between Russia, Ukraine and the US, the officials stated that the meeting was focused on economic and military issues, as well as disputes over how much Ukrainian territory Russia will continue to hold after the war.

“I think getting everyone together was a big step. I think it’s a confirmation of the fact that, number one, a lot of progress has been made to date in really defining the details needed to get to a conclusion,” one of the officials said.

The first round of talks were the first known highest-level direct talks between Ukrainian and Russian officials on a plan being pushed by Donald Trump to end the nearly four-year war. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy said “a lot was discussed, and it is important that the conversations were constructive”. According to an unnamed US ofifical, US President Donald Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner talked to Russian leader Vladimir Putin for four hours in Moscow ahead of the trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi. They “met for just about four hours, and again, a very, very productive discussion, speaking about the final issues that are open”, the official told a media call on Saturday.

It’s not clear at this point who from the three governments will be involved in next week’s talks.
