Ukrainian forces have struck the launch site of Russia’s Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile in Kaputsin Yar training area in Astrakhan region.
According to a statement published by the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on February 5, several hangar-type buildings at the site were damaged, with one hangar significantly struck and personnel evacuated from the area. The attack was launched with FP-5 Flamingo subsonic cruise missile designed to carry large warheads for deep strikes and with a range of 3,000 kilometeres.
The Special Operations Forces of Ukraine, known as SSO, confirmed the strike that was launched with other units of the Ukrainian Defence Forces. “Long-range drones from the SSO Deep Strike units inflicted fire damage on the infrastructure of the Russian military facility,” the SSO said in a statement. The operation lasted throughout January 2026 with the coordination of Chornaya Iskra representatives of Russia’s insurgent movement, who provided intelligence and information support.
Being one of Russia’s main missile testing sites, Kapustin Yar test range is used for trial of ballistic and other weapons. From this site, Russian forces have carried out test launches of the Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile, a system derived from the RS-26 Rubezh and capable of traveling several thousand kilometers with hypersonic speeds in its terminal phase. The missile was first publicly employed against Ukraine in November 2024, when it was launched from Kapustin Yar toward the city of Dnipro. Later attacks linked to Oreshnik launches from the same facility include a strike on infrastructure near Lviv in January 2026. Because of its involvement in developing and deploying the Oreshnik system, the site has also been targeted by Ukrainian drone strikes.
