Sweden unveils $1.4bn military aid package for Ukraine

Sweden will allocate $1.4 billion to help Ukraine in the war with Russia, Defence Minister Pal Jonson said on February 19. The support represents Sweden’s 21st military aid to Ukraine since the start of the full-fledged war in February 2022 and will focus on air defence systems, long-range weapons, and ammunition.

Jonson revealed that the military aid package is the third largest so far that Stockholm delivered to Kyiv. “That is to say, air defense and sustaining the platforms we have delivered with ammunition,” Jonson said. Of $1.4 billion, $473.3 million will go to delivering to Ukraine an “advanced short-range air defense capability,” according to the government. This would include additional units of the TRIDON Mk2 mobile anti-aircraft artillery system, which Sweden announced in early February it was supplying to Ukraine.

Roughly $470 million of the total funding will be directed toward advanced short-range air defense capabilities, including artillery and missile platforms, interceptor munitions, sensor arrays, electronic warfare assets, and command-and-control infrastructure.

Jonson said the systems are “intended to safeguard key infrastructure and densely populated civilian areas.”

An additional $330 million will be allocated to the provision of long-range artillery rounds, 40mm air defence ammunition and 120mm mortar shells, along with associated training and maintenance support.

Beyond munitions and air defence capabilities, Sweden will also supply spare parts, carry out repairs and replace equipment it has previously delivered to Ukraine.
