Russia’s war casualties in Ukraine exceed 1.2 million

Russia has lost over 1.2 million servicemen, killed or injured, since the beginning of the full-fledged invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, US-based think tank revealed in its new report.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies, CSIS, revealed that 325,000 Russian soldiers were killed out of an estimated 1.2 million total. "Despite claims of battlefield momentum in Ukraine, the data shows that Russia is paying an extraordinary price for minimal gains and is in decline as a major power," the report said. The CSIS stressed that no major power has suffered anywhere near these numbers of casualties or fatalities in any war since World War II.

Ukrainian army has also suffered major losses, between 500,000 and 600,000 casualties, of which nearly 100,000 and 140,000 were killed since the start of the war till December 2025. “Combined Russian and Ukrainian casualties may be as high as 1.8 million and could reach two million total casualties by the spring of 2026,” the thinktank said. UN monitors say civilian casualties have reached almost 15,000 verified deaths since 2022 but that the actual total “is likely considerably higher”.

It's worth noting that Russia’s large-scale battlefield losses come with relatively small territorial gains, with Moscow increasing its control of Ukrainian lands only by 12% since 2022, according to the report. Moreover, the report said Kyiv retains a considerable battlefield advantage, while calling into questions allegations voiced in certain circles, including in the White House, that Russia ‘s victory in Ukraine was inevitable. Last month, US President Donald Trump told local media that Moscow had an upper hand in its four-year-war, as Russia was much bigger in terms of territory and “the size will win at some point”.
