Russia captures another village in northeastern Ukraine

The Russian Defence Ministry said on Saturday that its forces completed the capture of the village of Starytsya in Ukraine’s north-eastern Kharkiv region.

The village is near the town of Vovchansk that Russian troops have attempted to capture over the past months despite Ukrainian resistance. The Ukrainian military’s general staff reported late Saturday that Russian troops carried out six assaults in an area that includes Starytsya, without confirming any change in control of the village. Ukraine’s DeepState military blog did not refer to Starytsya in its Friday update but noted that Russian forces “continue to apply pressure in the Vovchansk area.” The battlefield accounts could not be independently confirmed.

The Russian Defence Ministry also stated on Saturday that its forces carried out large-scale strikes on Ukraine’s long-range drone sites and energy facilities.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Sunday that Russia launched a barrage of thousands of drones, guided aerial bombs, and missiles of various types, targeting energy facilities, critical infrastructure, and residential buildings over the course of a week. “Russia’s main targets right now are our energy sector, critical infrastructure, and residential buildings. This week alone, the Russians have launched more than 1,700 attack drones, over 1,380 guided aerial bombs, and 69 missiles of various types,” Zelenskiy said in a Telegram post. Zelenskiy stressed that every major Russian strike could be devastating. It should be noted that Russia’s massive air strikes knocked out power to over 1 million houses across Ukraine over the weekend. The attacks followed the first high-level trilateral talks held between Russian, Ukrainian and US representatives in the Abu Dhabi, the UAE on Friday.
