Russian attack prompts evacuations, knocks out power, heating to thousands of Ukrainians

Ukraine’s capital Kyiv came under barrage Russian missile and drone attacks on Thursday, with several buildings hit in the assault, officials said.

The attacks knocked electricity, heating and water to thousands of residents in Kyiv and cities of Dnipro and Odessa. "A mass attack on the capital is still underway," Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced on Telegram early Thursday, adding that residential and non-residential buildings on both sides of the Dnipro River were hit.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the Russian attack involved 24 ballistic missiles, one cruise missile and 219 drones. Ukrainian forces neutralized 16 missiles and 197 drones. Falling drone debris struck near two residential buildings in Kyiv, while no fire broke out and no casualties were reported. Over 100,000 families were without electricity, according to private energy firm DTEK, which claimed one of its thermal power plants had been targeted but did not disclose the location.

According to Regional governor Oleksandr Ganzha, Dnipro was also hit, with homes and cars sustaining damage.

The attacks came amid Ukrainian air strike on the Defence Ministry’s facility in Russia’s southern Volgograd near the frontline. Authorities declared immediate evacuation of residents of the nearby village to ensure their safety from the detonation during firefighting, regional governor Andrey Bocharov posted on Telegram.
