US Secretary of State says Russian drones over Poland “unacceptable”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said Russia’s drone incursion into Poland this week was unacceptable but that it remained unclear whether Russia had sent those drones deliberately.

“We think it’s an unacceptable and unfortunate and dangerous development. No doubt about it: the drones were intentionally launched. The question is whether the drones were targeted to go into Poland specifically,” Rubio told reporters on Saturday.”

Rubio added that “if the evidence leads us there, then obviously that’ll be a highly escalatory move”. “There are a number of other possibilities as well, but I think we’d like to have all the facts and consult with our allies before we make specific determinations,” the US official explained.

Rubio’s comments follow US President Donald Trump’s remarks on Friday that Russia’s incursion into Poland might have been an accident. His remarks were rejected by Poland, with Prime Minister Donald Tusk post on X: "We would also wish that the drone attack on Poland was a mistake. But it wasn't. And we know it.”

The Kremlin has rejected Poland’s accusation of deliberate incursion. Russia claims its forces were striking Ukraine at the time of incursion and that it had not intended to hit Poland.
