Zelenskiy says Trump links security guarantees to Ukraine giving up Donbas

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has said that the United States has tied its proposed security assurances for a Ukraine peace agreement to Kyiv’s giving up control of the entire eastern Donbas region to Russia.

In an exclusive interview to Reuters news agency, Zelenskiy said Washington is increasingly preoccupied by tensions with Iran, while President Donald Trump is pushing Ukraine to accelerate an end to the war that began with Russia’s 2022 invasion.

Zelensky indicated that developments in the Middle East are shaping Trump’s approach, suggesting they are influencing his next moves. He argued that, in his view, Trump continues to favor a strategy that places heavier pressure on Ukraine rather than on Russia.

In 2026, senior representatives from the United States, Russia, and Ukraine have convened for three rounds of trilateral negotiations in Abu Dhabi and Geneva, aiming to broker a settlement to the most devastating European conflict since World War II. The war has caused widespread destruction across Ukraine and resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths.

Zelensky has consistently stressed that any peace deal must be backed by strong, reliable security commitments from international partners to prevent Russia from reigniting the conflict later on.

However, key aspects of those guarantees remain unclear. Zelensky highlighted two central uncertainties: who would finance Ukraine’s continued arms procurement to maintain deterrence, and how allies would respond if Russia were to launch another attack in the future.
