Ukraine’s unmanned forces have struck high-value air defence systems worth a total of $60 million during operations carried out over the past three days, the Security Service of Ukraine reported on Friday. The targeted military targets are he Buk-M1, Buk-M2, and Tor-M2 air defence systems. The security service also shared video footage of the moment of the drone strikes on Russian military targets. The location of attack has not been disclosed.
The operation was carried out by “Asgard” battalion, part of the 412th Nemesis Brigade of the Special Operations Forces, jointly with the 12th Special Purpose Center and the Kabul 9 special unit under the Main Intelligence Directorate of Defense Ministry. All three air defence systems were damaged in the attack. The destruction of the air defence systems are believed to significantly weaken the coverage of key areas and strategic objects.
The Buk-M1 is a mobile, medium-range air-defense system intended to take down aircraft and cruise missiles. The Buk-M2 is its upgraded version, featuring quicker radar and extended reach, and is commonly deployed to guard important command centers. The Tor-M2 is a short-range platform designed to counter drones, precision-guided munitions, and low-altitude missiles. Together, these systems make up a vital layer of Russia’s air-defense network, and losing them “greatly diminishes” Russia’s capacity to shield strategic locations, according to the Unmanned Systems Forces.
