Ukraine has used domestically-produced long-range Flaming missiles and Ruta missile drones in strikes on Russia and will scale up such strikes, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on October 28.
“Flamingo was used in combat. Ruta was used in combat. We are doing everything so that this year we can conduct more serious trials not just one, two, or three. We believe that we will succeed,” Zelenskiy said in a press briefing. Zelensky noted that repeated use of the missiles has proven effective, adding that the military is optimistic about further strikes with the new weapons.
Reports about production of Ukraine’s Flamingo missiles that have a range of nearly 3,000 kilometers, emerged in local media in August. Soon, Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal confirmed the reports, describing the Flamingo as a “very powerful and long-range weapon.” In October, Western media reported that Ukraine’s Flamingo struck an intelligence base of Russia’s Federal Security Service in Crimea Peninsula.
Produced by Fire Point domestic company, Flamingo is a subsonic cruise missile designed to carry large warheads for long-range strikes. It has a payload of 1,150 kg and other warhead variations are planned. All components, except for warheads are produced by Fire Point.
