Ukraine ratifies a century-long partnership deal with UK

The Ukrainian parliament on Wednesday ratified a 100-year partnership agreement signed with the United Kingdom in the filed of security earlier this year.

According to the agreement, which was published by Ukraine's Presidential Office, Kyiv and London will ehance defense cooperation while addressing long-term threats and challenges to maritime security.

The Verkhovna Rada ratified the historic agreement with 295 MPs voting in favour on Wednesday 17 September. Ukraine’s Presidential Office head Andriy Yermak described the ratification of the deal as “important” in a post on X.

Signed on 16 January, the 100-year partnership agreement aims at deepening security ties and strengthening collaboration for future generations. The agreement was based on the earlier security agreement inked on January 12 last year.  The new agreement expands the scope of cooperation from a 10-year to a 100-year term.

The document includes cooperation in areas such as security and defence, maritime affairs, economy, energy, justice, including international justice, and countering disinformation. Additionally, the agreement designates the UK as Ukraine’s priority partner in the energy sector, extraction of critical minerals, and production of green steel. The UK has also developed a new scheme for tracking stolen grain from territories occupied by Russia, and a special database has been created for this purpose.
