Ukraine launches UAV drone attack on Russian oil refinery 2,000 km behind frontline

Ukraine this week struck Russia's oil refinery in Tyumen city in Siberia, more than 2,000 kilometers from the frontline, making it the long-range Ukrainian attack deep on Russian territory.

At least two drones damaged the refinery during the overnight attack on October 6, local Astra Telegram channel reported. However, the regional government sought to minimize the outcome of the attack on the city, with the local officials stating that three UAVs were downed over an "industrial facility" in Tyumen, stressing that no explosions, fire occurred and there were no casualties. Despite eye-witness reports about sounds of explosions, the Russian Defence Ministry stated that no fire had occured at the refinery.

The attack on Tyumen oil refinery was part of a larger overnight offensive between October 6 and 7 that saw Ukrainian forces launch around 250-300 drones targeting 14 regions across Russia and the Russian-annexed Crimea Peninsula. The air raid was the second largest single-night drone attack since the start of the nearly four-year war, with only the record-setting May 2025 attack - featuring more than 500 drones - surpassing it. Earlier, Ukrainian forces also struck the largest oil refinery in Feodosia in Russia's occupied Crimea Peninsula with blaze continuing and spreading further through the facility. The Ukrainian army claimed responsibility for the attack. Separately, massive fire occurred in a military production facility in Russia’s southwestern Novosibirsk region in Siberia on Wednesday. However, it is yet to be clarified whether it was caused by a Ukrainian attack.

By early October, Ukrainian attacks had reportedly disabled 38-40% of Russia’s total oil refining capacity, creating widespread fuel shortages and long lines at filling stations across central and eastern Russia. Occupied Crimea has been among the hardest hit, with gas stations closed or rationing fuel to just 20 liters per vehicle.

A previous Ukrainian drone strike in 2024 destroyed roughly one-third of Feodosia’s 34 fuel reservoirs. Based on NASA’s latest satellite data, another quarter to a third of the facility’s capacity may have been destroyed in this most recent attack—marking a severe new blow to Russia’s already strained energy infrastructure.
