Ukraine launches possible HIMARS attack on Belgorod, causing water, heating disruptions

Ukraine launched a missile attack on Russia’s border Belgorod region on Friday with the possible use of HIMARS missile, knocking out power and causing water, heating shortages. Regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov, a local water utility company and Rosseti and Belgorodenergo energy companies confirmed the strikes on the region.

Governor Gladkov said energy facilities were seriously damaged in the overnight attacks, while local Telegram channels reported that the Belgorod combined heat and power plant and Frunzenskaya power substation near Streletskoye village had been struck. "We have extensive damage to energy infrastructure in the city of Belgorod as well as in the Belgorod, Rakitnoye, Borisovka, Grayvoron and Yakovlevsky districts," Gladkov said in Telegram.

The attack was launched with HIMARS High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, according to local SHOT channel that is affiliated with Russian security services. However, these reports has yet to be verified by official sources. The attack Belgorod follows Russian strikes on capital Kyiv that injured several people. Russian air raids on Kyiv and across Ukraine have crippled the country’s energy infrastructure amid the below zero temperatures.

Being on the border with Ukraine, Belgorod region comes under frequent missile and drone attacks. Ukraine has been scaling up air strikes targeting Russia’s strategic energy and military facilities in an attempt to disrupt Russia’s efforts to continue its nearly four-year war of invasion.
