Ukraine denies involvement in shooting of Russian intelligence officer

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has denied Moscow’s claims that Kyiv was involved in the recent shooting of Russian military intelligence officer Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev.

In a statement to Reuters, Sybiha said Ukraine “had nothing to do with the attack” on deputy head of Russia’s GRU military intelligence, adding that it might have been linked to “internal fighting” in Russia. Russia’s Federal Security (FSB) claimed on February 8 that assassination attempt on Alekseyev had been orchestrated by Ukraine. The FSB claimed on Sunday that it arrested the suspect in the general’s shooting and extradited him from Dubai to Russia. The FSB named the Ukrainian-born Russian national in his 60s as Lyubomir Korba.

In a statement, the FSB claimed that Korba was recruited, trained, and dispatched to Russia by Ukraine’s SBU in August. It also alleged that Korba monitored senior Russian military officials in the Moscow region and received a firearm—allegedly planted by the SBU—from one accomplice, along with an electronic key to access the apartment building where Alekseyev lived.

Russia’s Kommersant newspaper reported on Saturday, citing a source close to the investigation, that Korba’ suspects in the shooting are expected to be questioned shortly and formally charged.

Alekseyev, 64, was the deputy head of Russia’s military intelligence, known as GRU, and played a key role in Russia’s war of invasion launched in February 2022. He was shot three times in his apartment block near Moscow.
