US President Donald Trump has urged Ukraine to reach a peace deal with Russia, claiming that Russian leader Vladimir Putin was ready for such an agreement.
“Zelensky, he has to get on the ball, and he has to get a deal done. Now he’s got even less cards,” Trump said in an interview with Politico publication on Thursday. Trump’s language resembled that voiced during Zelenskiy’s historic visit to the White House a year ago where Trump and Vice-President berated Zelenskiy for being ungrateful to the US and suggested that Kyiv was in a weak position and had no cards.
Furthermore, Trump reiterated his earlier remarks that “Putin is ready to make a deal”. Trump has repeatedly stated that the Kremlin was ready for peace, as long as Ukraine gives up its territory in the east of the country and waivers its NATO membership plans. Trump has long criticized Ukraine’s stance over the war in Ukraine, demanding Kyiv to make territorial concessions to the Kremlin. By comparison, he has spoken admirably about Vladimir Putin, claiming that the Russian leader was interested in reaching peaceful end of the four-year-war. Trump had a summit with Putin in Anchorage, Alaska in August, where he claimed “great progress” in talks.
Meanwhile, Zelenskiy said on Friday that the United States and the Middle East are seeking Kyiv’s expertise in countering Iran’s Shaheed kamikaze drones that Tehran is firing at US allies in the Middle East amid the ongoing war.
