Suspect in shooting of a Russian general is detained in Dubai

A man suspected of shooting a senior Russian military official in Moscow this week has been detained in Dubai, Russia’s Security Service, FSB, said on Sunday.

The announcement came two days after Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev was shot three times in the apartment block in Moscow, leaving him in critical condition. The suspect, a Ukrainian-born Russian citizen Lyubomir Korba, 60, was detained after fleeing to the United Arab Emirates and handed over to Russia, Russian media reported, citing the FSB that is overseeing the investigation into assassination attempt on General Alekseyev. Investigators said Korba had been tasked by Ukrainian intelligence to carry out the Friday’s shooting of Alekseyev outside of his apartment.

Televised footage showed mask intelligence officers escorting the blindfolded suspect from a small jet in Russia. The FSB also arrested a suspected accomplice, while another suspect fled to Ukraine.

Alekseyev, 64, was the deputy head of Russia’s military intelligence, known as GRU, and played a key role in Russia’s war of invasion launched in February 2022. Apart from this, Alekseyev was decorated with the Hero of Russia medal for his role in Moscow’s military campaign in Syria. The 64-year-old also headed Russia’s delegation in ongoing trilateral talks with Ukraine and the United States in Abu Dhabi. Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov earlier described the shooting of the general as an attempt to “derail” the peace talks aimed at ending the nearly four-year-war.

Ukraine has not commented on Russia’s accusations yet. It should be note that Kyiv had claimed responsibility for several other attacks on senior Russian military officials in the past. In late January, Russian intelligence officials claimed they thwarted an assassination attempt on a Russian soldier in St Petersburg. Earlier in 2024, Russian jailed an Uzbek national for killing Russian general Igor Kirillov in an explosion outside a block of flats in Moscow upon instructions from Kyiv. Ukraine’s Security Service acknowledged it was behind the attack. Another senior Russian military official, an officer of the GRU, Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, who was in charge of the Russian army’s training department, was killed in an explosion of an improvised explosive device planted under a car in Moscow.
