An overnight Russian strike killed three small children and their father and injured their pregnant mother in a town in Ukraine’s second-largest Kharkiv city, officials said Wednesday.
During the Russian attack on Tuesday night, a drone hit a residential building housing a family of town in the town of Bohodukhiv, according to the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor's Office. "As a result of the strike, the house was completely destroyed and engulfed in flames, and the family was trapped under the rubble," it said in a statement posted on the Telegram messaging app. The family had evacuated from a neighbouring village a few days ago.
A 74-year-old woman was also injured in the overnight attack that involved 129 drones, of which 112 were downed or neutralized, according Ukrainian Air Force.
Tuesday’s attack on Bohodukhiv came as Russia renewed its airstrikes on Ukraine after a week-long truce that had been requested by US President Donald Trump. In a separate attack on Tuesday, Russian troops dropped seven bombs on Slavyansk city, killing three people, including an 11-year-old girl, Donetsk regional head Vadym Filashkin said on Telegram. The attacks came after overnight drone strikes cut power to tens of thousands and killed at least four people in Bohodukhiv on Monday.
Located 30 km from Ukraine’s northeastern border, Kharkiv has repeatedly come under Russian attacks. Russia denies targeting civilians in the war of invasion that it launched in February 2022.
