Russia’s Ryazan oil refinery hist second time in a week

Ukraine launched a drone attack on Ryazan oil refinery, one of Russia’s largest, on November 20, second time in a week, Ukrainian military reported on Thursday.

Video footage of the attack shared in Telegram, shows the facility engulf in flames after explosion. Ryazan Governor Pavel Malkov confirmed the attack, claiming that debris from an intercepted drone caused a fire at “one enterprise”. Emergency services were brought to the scene. Thursday’s attack was the second strike on Ryazan refinery that is operated by Russia’s Rosneft oil company and caused suspension of the refinery’s crude processing operations. Ukraine’e Unnamed Systems Forces claimed responsibility for the drone attack on Ryazan refinery. The General Staff of Ukrainian Armed Forces confirmed the attack on the refinery and stated that damage was caused to the secondary oil-processing facilities.

Being fourth largest oil refinery in Russia, and with an annual capacity of 17.1 million tons, Ryazan refinery accounts for 5% of Russia’s total refining capacity - it processed 13.1 million tons of crude in 2024.  Apart from producing produces gasoline, diesel, liquefied gas, and the refinery also produces around 840,000 tons of TS-1 aviation keroseneused by Russia’s Aerospace Forces.

The attack came after Ukrainian forces also struck Ilsky Oil Refinery in Russia’s Krasnodar region early on November 19. Earlier on November 15, Ryazan oil refinery suspended operations after its main refining unit was closed due to a Ukrainian drone attack.
