Russia’s Foreign Ministry has stated that it will not make any compromises with regards to the US-proposed peace deal to end the war.
Speaking on Wednesday, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Moscow welcomed Washington’s efforts to reach a peace deal but there will be no concession from Moscow. “There can be no question of any concessions or any surrender of our approaches to those key moments of solving the tasks facing us, including in the context of the special military operation,” Ryabkov said, according to Russian state media TASS. Ryabkov reiterated Moscow’s position that any settlement needs to address the “root causes” of Russia’s invasion, which Moscow said included Ukraine’s bid to join NATO.
His remarks came after Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said Moscow received the latest copy of a US draft, adding that “some aspects can be viewed positively, but many require special discussions among experts.”
US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that the US-proposed peace plan was a “fie-tuned” version of an earlier 28-point plan and was sending special envoy Steve Witkoff to discuss it with officials from both sides.
Trump’s 28-point plan that would have seen Ukraine to withdraw from eastern Donetsk region and Washington de-facto recognize Donetsk, Luhansk regions and Crimea Peninsula as Russian, was widely rejected by Kyiv and Europe. It remains unknown what aspects have been removed from the peace proposal and which ones remain.
