Kyiv says Russia must face war crimes tribunal for war of invasion in Ukraine

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha has said Russia should face a tribunal similar to the post-WW2 Nuremberg Military Tribunal for February 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

“As we approach the important date [the 80th anniversary of Nuremberg Tribunal], it is critical to uphold the same high ideals of justice,”Sybiha said.

Furthermore, the top diplomat said majority of Russians support Vladimir Putin’s war of invasion. Drawing a parallel between Nazi Germany during the Third Reich when around 800,000 of 80 million Germans were arrested for dissent and opposing war, Sybiha said only 20,000 Russians out of 145 million have been arrested for dissent and protesting the war under Vladimir Putin’s rule.  “800 thousand and 20 thousand. Remember these two figures next time anyone, including the Russian liberal opposition, tells you ‘ordinary Russians are not guilty’,” Sybiha explained.

“Russians are either more brainwashed than Germans in the Third Reich, more cowardly, or more pro-aggression – or all of the above. This is a complete moral disaster: a nation in the east of Europe is filled with aggression, hatred toward other ethnicities, and readiness to commit the most horrific crimes,” the Ukrainian foreign minister said. He stressed that the Kremlin must face consequences of full-fledged invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 as well as the “crimes against humanity” and “atrocities” committed during this war.

As Subhia called for senior Russian officials face a war crimes tribunal, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov published an interview on Monday in which he accused the US and the UK of appeasing and even collaborating with Nazi Germany. Lavrov’s statement about Russia’s high ground during the WW2 came a day after a former Ukrainian oligarch Viktor Medvedchuk gave an interview to Russia’s government
