The Kremlin has said it would press on with the war with Ukraine, and rejected US President Donald Trump’s remarks that Kyiv could win back territories lost to Russia.
“We are continuing our special military operation to ensure our interests and achieve the goals set by Putin. We are doing this for both the present and the future of our country. For many generations to come. Therefore, we have no alternative,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov in a radio interview on Wednesday.
“The idea that Ukraine can recapture something is, from our point of view, mistaken,” Peskov told reporters earlier.
Peskov also rejected characterization of Russia and “paper tiger”, which was a reference to Moscow’s perceived weakness in he war. “Russia is more associated with a bear. And paper bears don’t exist. Russia is a real bear,” Peskov said.
The Kremlin spokesperson’s remarks came after Trump’s surprise change of course over Russia-Ukraine war. In a post on Social Truth, Trump questioned Russia’s military capabilities and suggested that Kyiv could regain its territories lost to Moscow. He made the remarks following his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenksiy on the side-lines of the UN general assembly summit in New York this week.
Former Russian president Dmitiry Medvedev earlier dismissed Trump’s pro-Ukraine remarks, stating that the US leader had been influenced by his meeting with Zelenskiy.
