Azerbaijan, UAE elevate their ties to strategic partnership

Azerbaijan and the United Arabic Emirates have signed a joint Comprehensive Strategic Partnership that will serve as a milestone in bilateral relations and further deepen ties.

The document was inked during UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s visit to Shusha, Nagorno-Karabakh on Tuesday. Welcoming Sheikh Mohamed in Shusha, Aliyev emphasised his frequent meetings with Sheikh Mohamed in the past, including most recently in Abu Dhabi in July as part of direct peace talks with Armenia.

In turn, Sheikh Mohamed said the bilateral ties “have developed consistently over the past decades”, stressing that the two sides were interested in further deepening the cooperation and that the trade turnover between the UAE and Azerbaijan had reached $2.24 billion in 2024. Reminding that the UAE had invested in Azerbaijan first Solar Power Plant, Sheikh Mohamed told Aliyev that “the production of several gigawatts of renewable energy in Azerbaijan in the near future will be possible precisely as a result of your personal instructions and the operation of your country’s companies”.

Apart from the strategic partnership agreement, the two sides also signed 12 Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) on energy cooperation, collaboration in Azerbaijan’s AI strategy for 2025–2028, and investment into the Southern Gas Corridor. The documents were exchanged by Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov and UAE Minister of State Saeed Al Hajeri.

In addition, UAE–Azerbaijan Joint Business Council was established.

Earlier this year, the UAE and Azerbaijan signed a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) aimed at driving joint economic growth, diversification and prosperity as part of the strategic relationship between the two nations. The CEPA is expected to contribute $680 million to the UAE’s gross domestic product and $300 million to Azerbaijan’s economy by 2031, according to the Emirates News Agency.
