Armenian, Azerbaijani leaders attend inauguration of Trump’s peace board on Gaza

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on Thursday attended the inaugural session of Donald Trump’s Board of Peace in Washington.

The two leaders accepted US President’s invitation to the Board of Peace as founding members in January.

The board was originally created to manage Gaza’s administrative shift away from Hamas control, but its mandate has since broadened to focus on promoting and sharing models of best practice that could be used by countries and societies striving for peace.

At the session, Donald Trump, who frequently highlights his role in addressing the long-running dispute between Armenia and Azerbaijan, once more referred to his involvement in facilitating the initial signing of a peace accord between the two states. “I think they’re friends now,” he remarked.

On the margins of the gathering, Nikol Pashinyan and Ilham Aliyev held a private discussion, though neither side disclosed any information about what was discussed.

Trump also stated that board participants had committed over $7 billion toward rebuilding efforts in Gaza, adding that the United States would allocate a further $10 billion to support the organization’s work.

Donald Trump has promoted the creation of a peace board focused on Gaza as a mechanism to oversee reconstruction, governance transition, and longer-term stabilization efforts in the territory. Initially conceived as a body to supervise the administrative shift away from Hamas control following the latest conflict, the board’s mandate has since been broadened. It now frames its mission more expansively as developing and sharing governance and reconstruction models that could serve as templates for other regions seeking post-conflict peace and recovery.
