Armenia and Azerbaijan to connect power grids under Trump Route project

Armenia and Azerbaijan have agreed to merge their energy systems under the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP), Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said on Wednesday.

"Certainly, Armenia and Azerbaijan's power grids will be connected to each other and mutually, on equal terms, will take advantage of opportunities for electricity exports and imports," Pashinyan said while addressing parliamentarians. However, he did not any timeline or further details about the plan to merge the energy systems of the two countries that were locked in a four-decade-war before the signing of the US-brokered Peace Declaration in Washington on August 8 last year. The document signed by Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in the presence of US President Donald Trump, ended the war between the two countries and also stipulated the opening of the Trump Route that will link Azerbaijan to its Nakhchivan exclave via the Armenian territory.

The so-called Trump Route that is projected to give Azerbaijan “unimpeded” access to Nakhchivan via southern Armenian region of Syunik, will be operated by TRIPP Delopment company under Armenia’s sovereignty. According to U.S. State Department, Armenia intends to offer the United States a 74% stake in the company and to keep 26%. In the future, Armenia's share might increase to 49%.

Trump Route is not merely a transit corridor, it also envisages an updated rail infrastructure, oil and gas pipelines, fibre-optic cables across South Caucasus region. Azerbaijan started the construction of the route in 2024 while Armenian announced it would start the construction work in its part of the route in 2026.
