Armenia and Azerbaijan have accepted an invitation by US President Donald Trump to join his Board of Peace, a group of global leaders overseeing the Gaza ceasefire plan.
The signing ceremony of the charter took place within the framework of the World Economic Forum in Davos on Thursday.
Azerbaijan said on Wednesday that it had accepted Trump’s invitation. “Azerbaijan, as always, is ready to actively contribute to international cooperation, peace, and stability," Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Earlier, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan joined Trump's "Board of Peace" on Tuesday, his spokesperson Nazeli Baghdasaryan said.
“Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has received an official invitation from US President Donald Trump to join the Peace Council as a founding member. Pashinyan accepted the offer with love and responsibility, reaffirming Armenia’s commitment to promoting peace,” Baghdasaryan posted on Facebook. On Thursday, the Armenian Foreign Ministry said that the country joined the board without the mandatory membership fee amounting $1 billion per year that countries must pay to security a permanent seat.
Around 35 countries, including Israel, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, have so far agreed to joint Trump’s Board of Peace that will oversee reconstruction of Gaza. About 50 countries have been invited to join the board that will be chaired by Trump for life.
