Zelenskiy signs new law to allow over 60+ to enlist in army

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Tuesday signed a law to allow people over sixty years to sign one-year contract for military service.

People under this age group will have to pass a medial exam and obtain approval from a unit commander in order to join the military.  All contracts will automatically end when martial law concludes.

The law that was passed by the Rada in the second reading on July 16, enables older volunteers to serve in non-combat and specialized roles. The new law underlines manpower shortage within the Ukrainian army and expands Kyiv’s recruitment pool.

Currently, men from 25 to 60 years old are conscripted to military service in Ukraine after general mobilization was announced after Russia’s full-fledged invasion of the country in in February 2022.
