Ukrainian man arrested in Italy over Nord Stream pipeline blast

A Ukrainian man has ben arrested in Italy for alleged coordination of undersea explosion of the Nord Stream gas pipeline between Russia and Germany in 2022. The 49-year-old man, identified only as Serhii K, was arrested in early hours of Thursday in San Clement resort after Italian authorities were alerted to his presence in the country, Italian police said. The man was arrested after a European arrest warrant was issued on Monday, Germany’s federal prosecutor’s office said on Thursday. According to German prosecutor’s office, the suspect was part of a group of people who planted devices on the pipelines near the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea.

“The bombing of the pipelines must be investigated, including through criminal prosecution. Therefore, it is good that we are making progress in this regard,” said German Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig in a statement.

The arrest came as the United States is brokering the potential peace deal to end Europe’s largest war that started with Russia’s full-fledged invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
