Ukrainian army on August 6 celebrated the one-year anniversary of its large-scale incursion into Russia’s Kursk region.
In a Telegram post, the army shared the video footage that captured Ukrainian troops’ advance to Kursk region as well as some of the operation carried out in the region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy marked the anniversary of Kursk operation as well as incursion into Russia’s border Belgorod region in his Telegram channel on Wednesday, describing the surprise incursion into Russian territory a year ago as “unexpected” for Russia and the world intelligence and “truly special”. “When many in the world thought that the situation was at a dead end, the Ukrainians showed that they would continue to defend their independence and force Russia to end the war,” Zelenskiy posted on Telegram.
Thanking the Ukrainian army for the incursion into Kursk, Zelenskiy said the attack on Russian territory prevented Moscow’s incursion into Ukraine’s border Sumy and Kharkiv regions.
“Ukrainians have once again managed to prove to the world that it is quite possible to put Russia in its place and respond to its attacks with dignity,” Zelenskiy stressed. Ukraine’s surprise attack on Kursk a year ago was aimed at diverting Russia’s attack on Ukraine’s eastern regions. Zelenskiy earlier described Kursk as a buffer zone that would be used as a bargaining chip during negotiations with Moscow.
