Russian FSB claims foiling Ukrainian bomb attack on Crimea Bridge

Russia’s Security Service, known was FSB, claimed on Monday that it thwarted a Ukrainian intelligence attack to blast the Crimean Bridge in Russian-annexed peninsula.

According to the FSB, the bridge would be exploded with 130kg of explosives smuggled in on a car through South Caucasus republic of Georgia. “A car packed with a powerful improvised explosive device entered Russia from Ukraine via several countries. It crossed the Russian-Georgian border at the Verkhny Lars checkpoint and was supposed to be transported to Krasnodar region on a private car carrier,” the agency said in a statement. According to the FSB, the electric Chevrolet Volt car would be handed over to a man who would unknowingly drive the explosive-laden vehicle across the Bridge, and become an “unwitting suicide bomber”.

However, the FSB intercepted and diffused the explosive and detained those bringing it to the Russia territory, the agency said.

Kyiv has not commented on FSB’s claims of its involvement in the plot to explode the bridge in Crimea. It should be noted that Ukraine’s Security Service, SBU, has repeatedly attacked the Crimean Bridge since Russia’s full-fledged invasion in February 2022. Last month, the SBU, targeted the bridge with underwater explosives equivalent to 1,100kg of TNT.
