Russia’s national flag carrier Aeroflot cancelled at least 42 mostly domestic flights on Monday after a cyber-attack by a Ukrainian group that caused disruptions in the airline’s work.
A pro-Ukrainian group called Silent Crow claimed responsibly for the attack, stating in a statement that the attack was in response to Russia’s war of invasion in Ukraine and was carried out jointly with a Belarusian group Cyberpartisans BY. "Glory to Ukraine! Long live Belarus!" the group said in a statement. The hackers claimed to have destroyed up to 7,000 Aeroflot servers, accessed flight history databases and compromised critical corporate systems.
The Russian Prosecutor General acknowledged that Aeroflot’s problems were the result of a cyber attack. Kremlin Spokesperon Dmitry Peskov described the attack as “alarming”.
Dozens of flights were cancelled amid service disruptions to Aeroflot electronic systems, the airlines reported. "Customers may encounter issues when accessing our services," the airline said in a statement, adding that passengers should “monitor real-time updates on airport websites, information displays, and public announcements across the airline’s route network." Aeroflot said technical teams were working to tackle the problem and restore all services to normal as quickly as possible. The airliner did not give further details.
Silent Crow also threatened to publish personal data of all Russians who have ever flown Aeroflot.
