Romania’s defeated far-right candidate seeks annulment of presidential election

Romania’s ultranationalist and far-right candidate who lost the presidential election, said on Tuesday he would ask the constitutional court to annul the results of Sunday’s vote on foreign interference ground.

George Simion, 38, the leader of the far-right AUR party, was defeated by Bucharest mayor Nicusor Dan, a pro-EU centrist candidate who secured almost 54 percent of the vote in the run-off election.

"I officially ask (the) Constitutional Court to annul Romanian presidential elections," Simion posted on X, citing "external interferences by state and non-state actors".

George Simion, had prevailed in the first round of election held on May 4. Simion was backed by suppoters of populist Calin Georgescu whose surprise victory in first round of presidential election ws annulled last year. Simion’s dramatic victory in the first round of election drew waves of discontent across Romania. Simion had opposed military aid to Ukraine, has criticized the European Union’s “absurd policies” and voiced support for US President Donald Trump.

His opponent Dan, 55, by contrast, is a staunch supporter of Romania’s EU integration and NATO membership and has voiced support for Ukraine against Russia’s invasion.
