Fourteen are injured as Russia fires drone barrages at Ukraine’s Sumy region

Russia’s overnight drone attack injured at least fourteen people in Ukraine’s north-eastern Sumy region, authorities reported on Wednesday.

A family of three children among the casualties in the attack on Okhtyrka city that came amid US President Donald Trump’s efforts to end the three-year-war in Ukraine. Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko wrote on X that the three children injured in the attack, which struck a residential neighborhood in the town, were aged 5 months. “Russia continues to manifest its fears through acts of pure terrorism across Ukraine, once again targeting the homes of families and their sleeping children,” Svyrydenko said.

Some 15 drones were launched on Okhtyrka in the early hours of Wednesday. Overall, Russia fired 93 drones and two missiles at Ukraine overnight, Ukrainian air force said, noting that it shot down 2 drones and one missile, and recorded hits at 20 locations. Another person was injured in a large-scale drone attack hit Odessa city, sparking fire at a fuel and energy facility, Ukraine’s State Emergency Services reported.

Russia scaled up attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure this week. One attack targeted an oil depot belonging to Azerbaijani State Oil Company in Odessa, while another hit a gas transport facility in central Poltava region. The number of Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy facilities has hit 2,900 since March 2025.
