Baku has reportedly hosted another round of talks between Syria and Israel, the latest of such meetings between the two countries since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December 2024.
Israel’s close ally Azerbaijan has been reportedly mediating talks between Israel and Syria since May.
The recent meeting was held between Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer on July 31 following similar meetings between the two men in Paris earlier in July. AFP quoted a diplomatic source as saying that the meeting would focus on the “security situation, particularly in southern Syria - where Bedouin and Druze militants had been clashing.”
According to unconfirmed reports, Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa met an Israeli delegation in Baku in mid-July on the sidelines of his meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. Al-Sharaa had also met with the Israeli delegation in May.
