Armenia, Pakistan to establish diplomatic ties

Pakistan has officially recognized Armenia as Yerevan and Islamabad signed an agreement on Sunday to establish diplomatic relations.

The Joint Communiqué on the Establishment of Diplomatic relations between the two countries was signed by Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and his Pakistani counterpart Mohammad Ishaq Dar on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin, China.

Pakistan, a close ally of Azerbaijan that has been at a war with Armenia in the past three decades, was the last country not to recognize the South Caucasus country. Conversely, Pakistan was the second country after Turkey to recognize Azerbaijan’s independence.

With the Communiqué signed on Sunday, Yerevan and Islamabad expressed their intention “to enhance friendly relations in accordance with the UN Charter, including the principles of mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-aggression, non-interference in each other’s internal affairs, equality, mutual benefit and peaceful co-existence,” according to the Armenian Foreign Ministry’s statement.

The two sides also discussed development of bilateral cooperation’ and ‘exchanged views on engagement on multilateral platforms, including the UN and the SCO’.

It should be noted that Pakistan had diplomatically supported Azerbaijan during the Nagorno-Karabakh war in 2022, while Baku supported Islamabad during the April-May India-Pakistan military confrontation.
