Russia launches one of largest aerial attack on Ukraine since start of war

Russia launched a barrage of nearly 1,000 drones at Ukraine on Tuesday, killing at least seven people in what became one of the largest-scale attacks aerial attacks since the start of the four-year-war.

Ukraine said Russia fired up to 400 long-range drones, 32 cruise missiles overnight followed by another 565 drones launched during day time. The strikes hit cities across West of Ukraine, including Lviv where the UNESCO-listed 16th century Bernardine monastery was hit, causing damage, local authorities said. Images shared in social media captures moment of kamikaze drone strike at a busy street in Lviv, followed by strong fires and secondary explosion.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said around 11 Ukrainian regions were hit in the barrage, while urging Kyiv’s allies to provide more defence munitions to help his country counter Russian attacks. He reminded that the Ukrainian army was relying on US for air defence systems capable of intercepting ballistic missiles, but currently shortage of such systems due to the joint US-Israeli war with Iran.

Ukraine’s neighbour Moldova was also affected by the relentless Russian attacks, with Chisinau reporting that the key power lines linking the country to Europe had been damaged during these attacks on Tuesday. The Moldovan government urged its citizens to reduce electricity during peak hours.  Meanwhile, Russian troops have intensified their attacks in eastern Donetsk region, taking advantage of the spring weather conditions. Russia’s advances have been relatively slow during the winter. Kremlin’s forces aim to make gains along eastern and southern fronts of Ukraine.
