Seven people were killed and 10 others were injured as Ukraine launched a drone attack on a chemical plant in Russia’s Smolensk region, south-west of Moscow.
According to Russian Investigative Committee’s report, Ukraine fired 30 unmanned aerial vehicles equipped with explosive devices on the nitrogen fertilizer plant Dorogobuzh in the strike that the agency described as a “terrorist attack”. "As a result of the detonation of the explosive devices, civilians were injured: 7 people died, and at least 10 were wounded," it stated.
Regional governor Vasily Anokhin also confirmed a massive drone attack on the region, writing on Telegram that 14 of those unmanned aerial vehicles were shot down. "The opponent struck a civilian industrial enterprise producing nitrogen fertilizers, the Dorogobuzh Plant," Anokhin said, calling it a "barbaric terrorist attack." The governor said the wounded were hospitalized, adding that residents from nearby locality were being evacuated to reduced threat to their lives.
Meanwhile, the Russian Defence Ministry declared a “red level” drone attack danger in Smolensk region. Ukraine’s state media confirmed the attack on the Dorogobuzh plant, stressing that the enterprise supports chemical production that is critical to Russia’s defence industry. According to some reports, the enterprise provided 10% of the entire production of ammonium nitrate across Russia in 2014.
