Zelenskiy offers Saudi Arabia help in combating Iranian kamikaze drones

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has offered Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman his help in intercepting Iran’s Shaeed kamikaze drones, which have been launched on a number of Gulf countries since the start of the US-Israeli war on Iran.

Ukraine wrote on X that he spoke to Mohammed bin Salman on Saturday about countering Shaheed drones. “Ukraine has been fighting against ‘Shaheds’ for years, and everyone acknowledges that no other country in the world has such experience,” Zelenskiy wrote, adding that “We are ready to help and expect that our people will also receive the necessary support.”

Since the start of Russia’s full-fledged invasion in February 2022, Ukraine has focused on manufacturing low-cost and effective drones to counter Russian attacks, including those involving Iranian-made Shaheed kamikaze drones as well as homemade copies known as the Geran. This turned Ukraine into one of the leading producers of interceptors and enabled Kyiv to offer its expertise to Gulf countries that have been left in the middle of the conflict fighting between Iran and the US and Israel. By offering his help, Zelenskiy hopes to increase Ukraine’s leverage with allies and thus, receive valuable defence systems in needs to defend itself against Russian air strikes. Earlier, US President Donald Trump said he would accept any help from any country when asked about Zelenskiy’s offer to support to help counter Iranian drones.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian companies producing low-cost interceptor drones, which are designed to destroy hostile unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), say they are capable of exporting the systems in large quantities. Their comments come as interest grows from the United States and countries in the Middle East, with requests for the technology increasing following the outbreak of the Iran war. hese interceptor drones were developed during Ukraine’s war with Russia, where they have been used to counter frequent attacks by Iranian-designed Shahed drones that Moscow deploys against Ukrainian targets.
