Ukrainian troops recapture city council building in embattled Kupiansk

Ukrainian troops have regained control over the City Council building in strategic Kupiansk city in northeastern Ukraine and raised the Ukrainian flag in the area.

The operation was carried out by the 2nd Khartiia Corps of the National Guard of Ukraine, NGU. "Khartiia has established control over the building of Kupiansk City Council. The Khartiia search-and-destroy unit and the Kupiansk tactical group are completing mop-up operations in the city, which was deblocked during a successful operation led by the command of the 2nd NGU Corps,” the corps said in a statement on Monday.

The unit posted video footage of the operation of the capture the building in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region. The operation in strategic city of Kupiansk came amid intensified Russian attacks in Kupiansk and Lyman directions. Earlier, Viktor Trehubov, Head of Communications for the Joint Forces Group, said Russian troops were seeking to push Ukrainian forces off the left bank of Oskil River near Kupiansk. Trehubov reiterated the Joint Force Group’s earlier remarks that the Russian reports about the capture of Kupiansk were “false”, stressing that the complete clearance of the city from remaining enemy groups may take several more weeks.

Kupiansk has been one of focal points of fighting due to its strategic importance as a logistics and rail hub. Last month, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy visited Kupiansk front where he recorded a video next to the city’s entrance sign and congratulated Ukraine’s Ground Forces on their special day.
