Ukraine inks defence agreements with UK, Spain

Ukraine has signed new defence agreement with the United Kingdom and Spain to end the war as part of attempt to boost Kyiv’s defences against the Russian army as the war has entered the fourth year.

In a nightly video address on Thursday, Zelenskiy said he secured new defence agreements during his visits to both countries this week, which concern both weapons production and support for the Ukrainian society. In his words, Ukraine presented its own capabilities to partners to strengthen joint defense and protection. "We will continue this work. And it is evident that the need to coordinate efforts and to pool capabilities is now greater than ever," Zelenskiy said.

The UK and Ukraine agreed to work jointly to sell drone technology abroad during Zelenskiy’s visit to the country. The agreement comes as the ongoing US war in Iran and the surging oil prices have shifted the international community’s focus from the war in Ukraine. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte joined the talks to discuss the sale of drones, as well as related technologies and Euro-Atlantic security.

Ukraine also signed co-production agreements with Spain for battle material including drones, radar and missiles, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Wednesday. "We cannot deny that the crisis in the Middle East is monopolising conversation and precisely for that reason, I want to say to the government of Ukraine that nothing and no one will make us forget what is happening in Ukraine. We will keep our support for the Ukrainian people with the same intensity,” Sanchez said.

The large-scale US and Israel airstrikes on Iran entered the third week, with no end in sight.
