Moldova slams Russia’s use of Oreshnik hypersonic missile in attack on Ukraine

Moldova’s Foreign Minister Mihail Popșoihas has strongly condemned Russia’s deployment of its Oreshnik hypersonic missile during a “brutal attack” on Ukraine.

In a statement on Friday, Minister Popșoihas urged international response to Russia’s actions. "Human life is one of the highest values protected by the Council of Europe, and there must be no impunity for these brutal attacks," the minister said. Popșoihas who chairs the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, highlighted  the measures taken at the European level to ensure international accountability for Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. In his words, the mechanisms already established or in the process of formation, including the Register of Damage, the Claims Commission and the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression, are key tools in this process.

Russia launched hundreds and drones and dozens of missiles at Ukraine on Friday night killing four people in capital Kyiv and disrupting electricity or water supply in Kyiv, Lviv and Kryvyi Rih. The bombardment included the deployment of Oreshnik hypersonic missile for the second time in the nearly four-year-old war.  The use of the nuclear-capable missile is seen as a clear warning to NATO and Kyiv’s western allies. The attack came days after Ukraine and its allies reported considerable progress towards agreeing on how to ensure Kyiv’s security in post-war period. The launching of Oreshnik also came amid the deepening diplomatic crisis between Russia-US ties and US forces have been striking Russian-linked oil vessels in the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea over the past few weeks.
