Ukrainian troops have struck a chemical linked to Russia’s military industry deep in Russian territory.
The attack on the Metafrax Chemicals plant in Perm region 1,600 km from the Ukrainian border was carried out by the Alpha unit of Ukraine’s Security Service on the night leading to February 17.
The facility produces methanol, urotropine, urea and pentaerythritol used in production of explosive for the Russian army. It’s under the Kremlin’s control and under international sanctions. Local Telegram released video footage of the explosion followed by fire was shared in local Telegram channels.
Perm Region’s Governor Dmitry Makhonin acknowledged that a Ukrainian drone strike had occurred in the region, offering no additional specifics other than confirming there were no reported injuries. The site had previously been targeted in September 2025 by long-range Ukrainian drones reportedly linked to the military intelligence agency Main Directorate of Intelligence (HUR). Amid the assault, online reports indicated that at least six explosions occurred within the plant’s grounds. Staff were evacuated from the site. Sources in the SBU added that preliminary information suggests a methanol production facility was struck. An SBU source said the agency is steadily targeting companies that provide raw materials and components to Russia’s military-industrial sector for weapons production. According to the source, attacks on these sites slow ammunition output, disrupt supply chains for the armed forces, and directly help decrease the scale of combat operations against Ukraine.
Over the past year, Ukrainian long-range drones deployed by the armed forces and intelligence services have carried out an increasing number of effective strikes against Russian oil facilities and defense-linked industrial sites.
