Ukraine’s Defence Defence Intelligence, known as HUR, destroyed an Antonov An-26 military transport aircraft in Karacha field in Crimea Peninsula on Friday amid intensified strikes on Russian military assets.
The attack marked the biggest one-shot strike on Crimea by the HUR, the agency said in a statement. It should be noted that having a range of up to 2,500 kilometers, the aircraft has a cargo capacity of up to 5.5 tons.
Along with Antovo aircraft, the Defence Intelligence also struck two expensive coastal radar systems - 55Zh6M “Nebo-M” and the 64N6E, which supported the operation of Russian S-300/S-400 air-defense systems, HUR stated.
The agency stated that long-range strikes on Ukraine’s Russian-annexed Crimea Peninsula were underway and were aimed at undermining Russia’s war efforts. Meanwhile, the General Staff of the Ukrainain Armed Forces confirmed that Russia suffered heavy losses due to the attack on Crimea.
The operation to target Russian assets was carried out by the “Prymary” unit of the Defence Intelligence. Media reports claimed there were killed and injured at the site, possibly among the crew or airfield command staff. These claims have not been independently verified.
Annexed by Russia in 2014, Crimea remains under Russian military occupation and is used by Russian forces as a strategic base for launching long-range strikes and drone operations against Ukrainian targets. Ukrainian long-range and special operations units regularly target military infrastructure, logistics facilities, fuel depots, and other installations on the peninsula with drone strikes and asymmetric attacks.
