A man convicted of a deadly shooting at the Azerbaijani embassy in Iran’s capital Tehran was executed on Wednesday.
The convict attacked the embassy building on January 2023 with a Kalashnikov rifle, killing the security chief and injuring two others. The attack was dubbed by Azerbaijan as an “act of terror” and caused deterioration of the already strained relations between Baku and Tehran. In the aftermath of the deadly attack Azerbaijan shut down its Tehran embassy.
The assailant was convicted of willfully murdering an Azerbaijani national using a firearm inside the embassy, purchasing, carrying, and keeping an illegal weapon and ammunition, and disrupting public order, Mizan news agency affiliated with the judiciary reported. The Iranian judicial authorities ruled that the attack was carried out “for personal reasons”.
Mizan reported that the man have claimed to have attacked the embassy because he thought his wife who had left him had visited the embassy and “never returned home”.
It should be noted that shortly after the attack Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesperson Aykhan Hajizadeh said Baku did not believe the attack was carried out on personal ground and accused Tehran of failing to protect the embassy building.
The attack had marked a turning point in the relations between the two countries.
