Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has hailed the US Senate for approving the long-awaited military package necessary for Kyiv’s counter-offensive against Russia.
The $95bn emergency wartime aid package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan was passed on Tuesday in Senate voting. The bill envisages $61bn aid to Ukraine as well as $10bn for humanitarian efforts in Ukraine, Israel and Gaza.
“American assistance brings just peace in Ukraine closer and restores global stability, resulting in increased security and prosperity for all Americans and all the free world,” Zelenskiy wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter after the bill was passed.
He thanked the senators advocating for aid to Ukraine. “For us in Ukraine, continued US assistance helps to save human lives from Russian terror. It means that life will continue in our cities and will triumph over war,” he went on saying.
The bill has long been opposed by Republicans and is yet to be voted at the House of Representatives.
Before the passing of the bill, Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer said on Monday that there was a strong support for the supplemental package to Ukraine. “Our security, our values, our democracy. It is a down payment for the survival of western democracy and the survival of American values,” Schumer said.
