Ukrainian drones on Saturday crashed into high-rise apartment buildings in Russian city of Kazan, 1,000km from the frontline. The unprecedented attack damaged the buildings. One person was killed and 13 others were injured in the attack.

Videos posted on Russian Telegram channels showed drones hitting a high-rise building and setting off fireballs in Kazan, the capital of Russia’s Tatarstan Republic. Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova said two drones hit a 37-storey apartment block and that Ukraine had been targeting an unspecified industrial facility but that it suffered no damage. Ukraine launched eight drone attacks on Kazan, six of which struck residential buildings.  One of the drones attempted to attack an industrial facility, but failed to hit its target. Zakharova said Kyiv was taking out its anger for “tangible military defeats on the peaceful population of Russia.” The foreign ministry spokesperson also expressed Kremlin’s outrage over what she described as the “hypocritical” silence of West and Western media amid Ukraine’s attack on civilians.

Russian Defense Ministry reported on Saturday that Ukrainian drones were fired from different directions during the attack on Kazan. Three of them were destroyed by on-duty air defenses, and another three were suppressed by electronic warfare equipment.
