Zelenskiy urges int’l response into North Korean troops’ deployment to Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has urged the international community to put pressure on Moscow and Pyongonyan over the deployment of North Korean troops to Russia. In his Telegram post on Friday, Zelensky said both countries must be forced to abide by the UN Charter and punished for escalation. “The world can clearly see what Russia really wants, and that is to continue the war,” he went on saying.

Zelenskiy said with reference to Ukrainian intelligence that Russia would deploy North Korean soldiers to frontline battles as of October 27 and 28.

There have been widespread reports about North Korean soldiers’ deployment in fareast Russian regions. The US said it had seen evidence that North Korea has sent 3,000 troops to Russia for possible deployment in Ukraine, a move that could mark a fundamental challenge to Ukraine due to its manpower shortages. 

South Korea has also warned about North Korean troops being sent to Russia. The country’s spy agency NIS, said on Friday that North Korean troops are training to Russia. NIS, particularly named bases in Vladivostok, Ussuriysk, Khabarovsk, and Vlagoveshensk regions where North Koreans have been deployed.  According to NIS, 1,500 special forces have been transferred to the port city of Vladivostok from where they will be deployed to battlefields. The statements issued in Kyiv and Seoul were further confirmed after a video emerged in social media showing what appears to be North Korean troops deployed in Russia’s far east region. North Korean soldiers are seen waiting in a line as military supplies are being distributed.
