Zelenskiy to visit Washington as Congress debates new aid package to Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zeleskiy is expected to visit the White House and the Capitol as part of his visit to the United States where he will be attending the United Nations general assembly next week.

The visit comes amid the ongoing Congressional debates on the next batch of military aid to Ukraine as it fights the Russian invasion. Earlier, President Joe Biden proposed a military and humanitarian aid worth $24bn to Ukraine.

This will be Zelenskiy’s second visit to Washington after the country’s full-fledged invasion by Russia. Zelenskiy made his first wartime visit to Washington last year where he delivered an emotional speech in the US Congress. Addressing the Congress members, Zelenskiy said that helping Ukraine was not a “charity” but an investment in global security and democracy.

The US has been the leading country providing military aid to Ukraine during its war with Russia since last year. From the time the US President Joe Biden took office in 2021, the US has sent $44.4 billion in military aid to Ukraine.
